Prime Minister’s office undersecretary Gianni Letta in a speech during the inauguration ceremony for Massimo Barra, as the new Red Cross president, said: “The election of the president of the Italian Red Cross was accompanied by unanimity and so by a strong consensus that will give to the Red Cross a great efficiency”. Letta remembered the three years of administration by an external commissioner, under Maurzio Scelli. “Also in that period we never violated the principles of autonomy and independence of the Red Cross. We believe in them and we always respected them also in the most difficult and dramatic moments in order that the Red Cross has never become an operative arm of the Italian government. We have always separated our functions” he said.
